All About Autoclaves: Simplify your sterilisation

When considering how to ensure a safe environment for animals in your practice, it is likely that the availability of sterile and disinfected surgical instruments will be one of your top priorities. For your vet practice, one of the best ways to ensure your equipment is fit for purpose is to invest in a new autoclave.

These devices provide the peace of mind that your equipment is safe, clean and ready to use while freeing up the time to focus on other important matters.

As something that will undoubtedly end up a core piece of your practice's equipment, it can be daunting to find a model that is the right fit. In this blog, we want to help simplify this process and things you might want to look out for in your practice's first, or latest autoclave.

Size and Fixings

All vet practices are different, and this is reflected in the autoclaves that we stock here at Vet Direct. With the capacity of our models ranging from 12 litres up to a formidable 45 litre offering, you can reflect on your practice’s individual needs and select an appropriately sized unit.

Additionally, all of our autoclave models come with an optional table extra that can comfortably hold even our largest 45L autoclave. These can be added into your basket (if required) with ease across on our website or with our experienced Customer Care team.

Autofill and Autodraining

When looking for a suitable autoclave, you probably want to look out for a model that offers Autofill and Autodrain features.

With Autofilling, you can simplify your sterilisation process by letting your device take care of managing water levels and eliminating the risk of human error. With this, you can count on the effective sterilisation of your equipment, whilst focussing your time and energies on other important matters.

Similarly, the Autodrain functionality featured in the 45L model we stock at Vet Direct can make your sterilisation even smoother with quick automated water drainage once the cycle is complete. This also helps your team members to steer clear of any potential biohazards that they may be exposed to in manually draining your autoclave. If you choose one of the 12-22L options, autodrain/autofill can be additionally added to your autoclave as long as your autoclave is situated within 2m of a sink.

Maintenance & Care

A key consideration in your decision to invest in an autoclave will likely be the maintenance of your new device. Alongside autoclaves themselves, we also stock cleaning consumables, thermal receipt paper and replacement filters for the reverse osmosis water purifier we recommend with our autoclaves.

While an autoclave might appear costly at first, they can help you and your practice save money in the long term, especially when cared for properly.
